My late mother is front row left. Jeanne Margaret Watson as she was then. I have been looking into Banstead Wood POW camp, as Mum was friendly with some of the Germans. She won a German songbook at school. She passed her love of the German language on to me

Earlswood Mount was converted into offices for Redhill General Hospital. The stables and garages were converted to two houses and my family lived in Fir Cottage, Earlswood Mount fromc1953 to early 1957. My father, Desmond Powell, was Group Catering Officer at the hospital. In 1957 he moved to Horton Hospital, Epsom and we bought our own house in Epsom.

These properties are 81 and 83 Brighton Road. I 1920, or thereabouts, my grandfather Herbert Marchant bought the property on the left, No. 83, and opened it as a greengrocer's and fruiterer's. My father, Van, who had just left school went to work for him, and later his daughter, Edith and youngest son Reginald also worked there. Our family continued to own the shop until 1980 when my father retired. My grandparents lived over the shop but later moved to The Cutting and then my parents lived there from 1940 when they married until 1952 when we moved to Meadvale. Even though I was only 5 when we moved I have many memories of living there. After we moved the living room was incorporated into the shop and the upstairs rooms were used for storage - it was not great.

I have only just found this site and, as I grew up in Meadvale, as did both my parents, I remember the Samuels family well, including two girls, one of whom I think was called Diane. My maiden name was Marchant and my Dad had a greengrocer's shop in Brighton Road, Redhill and knew George and Jack Samuels well.

I remember this event, although not the Punch and Judy. We used to have some photos of races which also took place. I think my Mum is standing in the middle of the front row of adults wearing a light dress and dark cardigan and I think the girl you can partly see sitting in front of her with darkish hair and a light coloured bow is me. I was six and we had moved to Meadvale from Brighton Road Redhill, where my Dad had a greengrocer's shop, the previous year although family had been living there since to 1860s. I can't see my sister who still lives there in a flat looking out over Swing Common.

My mother is in the photo, second row, fourth from the left.
She described cycling from Sutton to Reigate each day for school, lying on the grass looking at aircraft contrails overhead during the Battle of Britain, and sheltering in the nearby caves in the chalk during air raid alerts.

Hello again - I hope this post is accepted. I've had some wonderful information from a few correspondents about my great-aunt's school Woodside, and visited the old site, so I've put together all that I've collected and made a website with some photos: http://www.jillgoulder.plus.com/Woodside/. I hope it awakes a few memories for people!
I would have liked to contact Alan Cross of Newbury, who posted on the page in 2013 that he had photos of Woodside - I would so love to see those! And Helen MacDonald posted in Oct 2023 that she had photos of pupils in Woodside grey and green uniforms, which would have been wonderful to see, but sadly I haven't been able to contact her. Perhaps one day!

Hello Helen MacDonald - I've just seen your fascinating post about Woodside uniform photos! How absolutely lovely it would be to see them. I know that sadly (though understandably, of course) the site doesn't allow email addresses to be published, so I am most frustrated at how to contact you in order to see them. I was in touch, too, with several people too who were at Woodside at the same time, and who were interested in getting in touch with each other, which I'd love to do via a private email group. I hope that the excellent admin of the page can help (as some of the former pupils are now of very advanced years), so that ideally a few of us could exchange memories and photos. I'm ready to give an email address that can be freely published (starts with emmawoodhouse), and in my next post I'll give it and HOPE that the system won't block it and that some of us can communicate privately about Woodside. All the very best to all who knew and loved Woodside

This is indeed West Lodge and We lived in this house between 1967 and 1973 when Royal Earlswood Hospital existed as a residential hospital for patients with severe learning difficulties. My husband was a Hospital Engineer. Some of the happiest days of my life were spent here, and my two elder boys remember it with much affection. We met Gary's parents some year's ago at the Lodge.

I was at North Bank from 1948 to 1954. In the same class as Josephine & remember Gillian & Tony, all above. Tony, I seem to remember your mother, & big sister? Another teacher, Miss Jutson, taught us in the Transition class.
Do you remember the unvarying timetable? Today is Tuesday so we would have had English before our milk & Arithmetic afterwards. I seem to recall that term started on a Wednesday, so that was nature study. We learnt about earwigs & woodlice, & for many years I muddled them up!

Jo Stewart-Long - lovely to see your comment about Woodside! As you'll have seen in the comments, it was started by my lovely great-aunt Sylvia who then handed it on to Mrs 'Codfish'. Very sadly I know nothing about the history of the house - Redhill must have been very different in those days

I went on line to look for info on Woodside School and found all your comments - loved reading through them! I attended the school in I think 1968 to 1969, Mrs Godsiffe was headmistress (we called her Mrs Codfish behind her back!) My teacher was Mrs Lawson, but I would have liked Mrs Barklet instead as she was lovely.
It was indeed a lovely house, I'd love to know more about its history

I have a record of a Miss Doris Black who worked for the Mc Alpine Family at Holmsdale House Nutfield
Surrey. It is on A3 paper three pages long. It states where she first started in service for them in Thortonhall Clyde, Scotland.
Doris Black story really starts from 1918 when she worked in the shipyards on the Clyde.
Her father worked As an engineer for Sir Robert McAlpine, sadly he was killed in Lincolnshire while they were relaying the G.N.E. Railway. Please contact me if you would like to no more.

Derby posted this comment on

Yes, Graves did have other Foden coaches - a total of five altogether. Four of them were similar half cab Fodens - NPE 152, NPG 517, NPK 806 and NPL 900. The fifth Foden coach was one of their rear engine models - RPD 250. All carried bodies built by Metalcraft from Blythe Bridge, Stoke-on-Trent. They were delivered between 1949 and 1952 and the last was taken out of service in May 1964.
