THis photo is from the Croydon Natural History and Scientific Society collection, and was scanned by me (you can see the tell-tale scanning streaks of my old rubbish scanner!) and forwarded to Adrian for his family interest. It is good to see it here, but I thought I should point out the true origin of the picture.

This is not the SIR but the CMGIR - Croydon Merstham and Godstone Iron Railway. They were two separate railways although physically linked at Croydon.

Hi Keith. The reason why I protect the images the best way I can is because I don't own many of the images myself, and I feel duty bound to protect them just in case the owners object to distribution of their material. Better to be safe than sorry.

I was born in Mogador Road in 1947. The house, called Cotswold, is the third one up from the bottom right in the picture. The shop at the top of the road was owned by Mr & Mrs Ringrose in my early childhood. It was general grocery and household items etc.
When they retired it was bought by Mr & Mrs Lewis who had two daughters Peggy & Caroline. They moved on about 1962.
I used to do the paper round when I was 12 that included Mogador Road and all the large houses at the top of Mogador, also the Sportsman pub.
I well remember the two bomb craters in the field opposite Mogador Road and used to play in them as a young child before they were filled in.
Towards the top of the road on the left you can see the air raid shelter that us kids used to play in as well.
The last time I looked the shop sells horse related items. All the fruit orchards and fields are no longer used for such purpose and all seem to have been turned into pasture for horses.
I remember when the street lights were installed, it caused much excitement at the time.
My mother was born in the house next to the shop and survived a German fighter attack during the war when she was machine gunned whilst walking down Reigate Hill. She had one bullet hole in the rim of her hat and one in the hem of her coat, so I'm lucky to have been born at all.
My father was a firemen during the war. The U.S. Flying Fortress that crashed on Reigate/Colley Hill did so whilst he was on home leave. He attended but could do nothing for the crew unfortunately.

Hello. I have an extensive biography of T.E. Hammond (see http://www.vrwc.org.au/tim-archive/wo-tommy-hammond.pdf) and would like to add this historic photo (with suitable acknowledgement) to the article to further document my discussion of his wonderful 1907 walk. Is it possible to get a copy for non-profit use?

I found all of the pictures interesting. But the signal box has a great interest. I have one of the signal levers from the box and most of the lever plates I.D s I also have a cable ajusting wheel with LBSR stamped on it also removed from the old signak box. As a boy I stood by the old box many time colecting loco names and numbers.

I believe this photo dates from a very similar shot by Frith, taken in 1906. The shop in the foreground was replaced in 1911 by a fine private house (More Cottage) which still stands today. We believed the shop to have been a bakers, and clinker from an old bread oven was certainly found in the rockery at the rear of the house. However, the sign above the window suggested that it was a pork butcher's at the time of the photo (it is clearer to see in Frith's other view). Equally, the sign above the pillared canopy at the head of Park Lane says "Stoenman". Perhaps that was the monumental masons of similar name who moved into Bell Street to be replaced by these butchers (that shop at the head of Park Lane has been a butchers for many years).

I cant believe it the house in the picture above is where i went to school in the 1960's,up the steps right in front of them was the dinning room to the right of that was the staff room.To the left were class rooms and on the floor above were the dormatries. There wre steps on the right that went down on to Colley Lane, and on the side was a path that went down the side to a cottage wre on of the teachers used to live and that had a drive which went on to the main road and the heath was over the road, There was a sweet shop there, if i am not wrong there was a pub on the corner which went towards the heath aswell. I could go on and on it just unbelieable, i dont knon if it is still school as i live in Jersey in the Channel Island it would be good to know.I was in 7half acers which was quite large.
